The University of Jos (UNIJOS) has summoned all students to a compulsory meeting today over rising security concerns.
The school, in a memorandum dated July 29, and signed by Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, declared lecture-free period to ensure attendance by all students
It said the meeting was necessary “in view of recent events that threaten the peace, security and good image of our university.”
The university said the meeting will hold from 9am, at the Faculty of Social Sciences Auditorium.
Ishaya said the meeting would address general security concerns, recent unhealthy activities involving students, and measures to safeguard the university community, directing all deans and heads of department to suspend lectures between 9am and noon to guarantee participation.
The directive followed two recent incidents: the discovery of a beheaded body of a farmer, not affiliated with the university, on farmland within the institution’s permanent site about two weeks ago; and the death of a student, alleged to have been tortured by a group of youths over accusations of phone theft at an off-campus residence. Police have arrested suspects in the latter case and launched an investigation.
