Talk about buying American.
One of the key ways in which Trump plans to “make America great again” involves making everything in America American again.
Just on Tuesday night, as he was delivering his first-ever Address to Congress, Trump stressed the importance of buying American products:
“We must create a level playing field for American companies and our workers. Have to do it. Currently, when we ship products out of America, many other countries make us pay very high tariffs and taxes, but when foreign companies ship their products into America we charge them nothing or almost nothing…To launch our national rebuilding, I will be asking Congress to approve legislation that produces a $1 trillion investment in infrastructure of the United States, financed through both public and private capital, creating millions of new jobs. This effort will be guided by two core principles. Buy American and hire American.”
Which is why it struck some people on social media as a tad hypocritical that, as he was urging people to “buy American,” his daughter, Ivanka Trump, was sitting in the audience wearing an orchid pink dress by French designer Roland Mouret.
It bled into previous criticism concerning the fact that many of the items from Ivanka’s own line are produced abroad.
