Five universities in West Africa have earned a place in the The Higher Education (THE) African Ranking 2027, with institutions from Nigeria and Ghana sharing top honours in the region.
The ranking, produced by THE’s expert data team, assesses universities across five key areas: teaching quality, research output, international collaboration, knowledge transfer, and industry connections.
The results are used by students, academics, policy makers, and industry partners around the world to evaluate higher education performance.
All five West African universities that made the list were placed jointly at position 10 within the 801-1000 global band.
Here are the five institutions:
University of Ibadan (Nigeria) – Tied in the 801–1,000 global band, ranking among the top institutions in West Africa and moving up to lead domestic Nigerian rankings.
University of Lagos (Nigeria) – Tied in the 801–1,000 global band alongside UI, with high scores noted for research quality
Covenant University (Nigeria) – Positioned in the upper tiers of West African institutions with notable strength in industry engagement.
University of Cape Coast (Ghana) – Featured in the 801–1,000 global band and recognized as a leading institution in Ghana with strong teaching and research metrics.
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Ghana) – Continues to rank as a premier West African hub recognized strongly for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
