Legal icon, Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, and one of the country’s most consistent defenders of human rights, will on Thursday, November 13, be honoured by the Law Students’ Association of Nigeria, LAWSAN, Uniabuja chapter.
The event, which is being organised to commemorate the Faculty’s Beginning of Legal Year, will also see the former President of the West African Bar Association (WABA), delivering a keynote address.
According to a statement issued by the association and signed by its President, Muhammed Akingbolu, the event is designed to celebrate the sacrifices and contributions of Mr. Falana to Nigeria democracy, the legal profession, and the society at large.
“From all the records available, both offline and online, Mr. Femi Falana has consistently stood as a defender of truth, justice and equity. His contributions are immeasurable because he was there for generation before us and he is still there for our generation now. In fact, the credit of the democracy we are currently enjoying should be given to Mr. Femi Falana and his contemporaries and leaders like Chief Gani Fawehinmi, Chief Bola Ige, Chief Alfred Rewane, Beko Ransome Kuti, Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), Kunle Ajibade, Shehu Sanni and others,” Akingbolu said.
The statement also indicated that the event would also give students the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills in law, such as moot court, debate, quiz, and essay competitions.
According to him, the event would provide an opportunity for law students to interact with and also learn from the legal icon, who had handled several landmark cases successfully, in various courts of competent jurisdictions.
“The highlight of the event is a special honour to be conferred on Mr. Femi Falana as Senior Advocate of the Masses (SAM) for his sacrifice, struggle, and contributions to body of justice in Nigeria.
The student leader, however, expressed his appreciation to the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Mr. Uwakwe Abugu and the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mathew Adamu for their support and guidance to the students and staff of the Faculty.
