The coordinator, National Association of Nigerian Students, South West Zone, Josiah Adeyemo, and the management of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, Osun State, have called for a thorough probe of the circumstances surrounding the death of a student identified as Ayeni Ademiju.
An initial report said Ademiju was stabbed at the venue of the NANS convention in Osogbo, Osun State, last Saturday, which eventually led to his death.
The deceased was also said to be a student of the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree.
But in separate statements obtained in Osogbo on Monday, the NANS South West coordinator, Adeyemo, said facts available to his office showed that the incident that led to Ademiju’s death did not occur within the premises where the convention was held, while OSPOLY said the deceased, as of the time of death, was not its student.
Adeyemo further said, “The convention was successfully concluded before information concerning the deceased’s condition and subsequent death began reaching participants and officials who had already left or were leaving the venue.
“We are urging the Osun State Police Command to examine every credible angle, including the deceased’s movements, persons who were with him before his death, any earlier disputes, and any relevant affiliations necessary to establish the truth.”
Also, in a statement signed by the institution’s Registrar, Abiodun Oloyede, OSPOLY management said Ayeni was registered as a part-time student in 2023.
“But he voluntarily withdrew from the school as his records of registration could not be found on the institution’s portal,” the management said.
The statement further read, “Ayeni Ademiju, who was allegedly stabbed to death at the Joint Campus Council’s election, was admitted into the Part-Time programme of the Osun State Polytechnic Iree in 2023, but he did not complete his studentship registration.
“There was no evidence of registration, which could have enabled him to write his examinations to complete his National Diploma programme in the school. He left the Polytechnic about three years ago.
“We are perturbed to read on social media about his death. He should not be described as our student.”
