Lagos urges Students to Apply for Scholarships

The Lagos State Scholarship Board, Iyana-Ipaja Lagos, has called on students who are indigenes of the state to apply for scholarships.

Executive Secretary of the board, Mr Omotayo Fakolujo, at a media parley said the board was established to serve as an advisory body on scholarship matters and to grant scholarship award to deserving indigene students in various tertiary institutions on full time studies.

He added that 8,660 beneficiaries students would begin to receive their bursary and scholarship funds from this week, saying Lagos had enough money to cater for its students.

He said, “We have 7,000 applicants for bursary and the Lagos State Government has a vote of N1bn for these and we have expended N900m, so the issue of fund is not the problem. We always give those who apply except if you are not qualified. For scholarship, you go through CBT test, if you pass, we take you in.

“I can boldly confirm to you that since the inception of the present administration in the state, indigenes and non-indigenes have greatly enjoyed the magnanimous gesture and humane disposition of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu through constant payment of bursary and scholarship awards which is a financial support to sustain them in their academic growth.”

While speaking on the boards efforts on sensitisation, Fakolujo also maintained that the Board now visited campuses during any of their special programmes to sensitise the students about the opportunities available to them.

He also appealed to social and corporate organisations to partner with Lagos State Scholarship Board and direct their Corporate Social Responsibilities towards the provision of scholarship to deserving students.

Fakolujo said, “The functions of the board include the following, scrutinize application forms for bursary and scholarship awards; interview the applicants to determine their claims of being indigenes and residence of the state, provide financial support in terms of bursary and scholarship awards to bona fide indigenes and residents of the state in higher institutions of learning within and outside Nigeria.”
