The Management of Modobbo Adama University, Yola Adamawa State has described the two media reports (not The PUNCH) published on April 29 and May 3, 2025, that the institution has “confirmed deductions, pledged refund” and “MAU begins refund of institutional fees to Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) beneficiaries,” as false and a fabrication of lies by the media organisation.
In a press statement issued by the university and made available to Arewa PUNCH penultimate Tuesday, signed by the Information and Publicity Officer, Mohammed Nur Ismail, it stated that “the two reports were false, misleading, and do not reflect the true position of the institution.”
The statement further read in parts that at no point did Modibo Adama University confirm any such deductions, and that contrary to the report, the refund process did not commence recently.
The MAU statement pointed out that the university began refunding eligible students over a month ago, strictly following NELFUND’s guidelines.
Part of the statement read, “For the 2023/2024 academic session, out of 1,157 students sent to the University by NELFUND under Batch A, refunds have successfully been made to 679 students. About 60 students were affected by failed payments, and 418 students submitted inaccurate or incomplete bank account details.
“For the 2024/2025 academic session, 4,320 students were listed under Batch B. Of these, 1,151 students qualified for a refund, and 1,039 have already received theirs. The remaining 112 experienced failed transactions, and efforts are ongoing to resolve the issues. It is worth noting that registration for the current session is still in progress.
“Any delays in disbursement are primarily due to incorrect or incomplete account details provided by students. The Bursary Department is actively addressing these issues to ensure all qualified students receive their refunds without further delay.”
The Information and Publicity Officer, Ismail, insisted that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibrahim Umar placed high priority on students’ and staff welfare, thus ensuring financial transparency and accountability.
Arewa PUNCH reports that the management thus urged the media and the general public to seek clarification from official university channels before disseminating wrong information and to avoid spreading misinformation.
“We remain committed to transparency, accuracy, and the welfare of our students,” Ismail declared.
