The National Union of Taraba State Students (NUTASS) has called for calm following recent security concerns involving students of the Taraba State College of Nursing Sciences, Jalingo.
The union, in a statement signed on Monday by its representative, Nshukwi Yaje Mary, urged students, residents of Yagai community and other members of the public to remain peaceful and law-abiding while authorities address the situation.
NUTASS said it was alerted to the disturbing developments early Monday morning, acknowledging the anger, fear and frustration generated by the incidents reported in the area.
The union, however, cautioned against actions that could further escalate tensions or endanger innocent lives and property.
According to NUTASS, the concerns raised by students and affected residents have received the attention of the Taraba State Government, which it said had commenced steps to address the situation.
The union appealed to students and members of the public to remain calm and allow the relevant authorities to carry out their responsibilities.
NUTASS also commended the Taraba State Governor, Dr Agbu Kefas, for what it described as his prompt intervention in response to the concerns raised by students, particularly through the Secretary to the State Government.
“The intervention demonstrated the government’s concern for the safety, welfare and protection of students and residents across the state,” the union said.
It also commended students and members of the affected communities for speaking out and bringing their concerns to the attention of the appropriate authorities.
NUTASS stressed that concerns relating to insecurity and alleged injustice should be reported through appropriate channels to enable authorities to take necessary action.
The union expressed confidence that individuals found responsible for alleged acts of violence, bullying, theft, harassment, rape and other criminal activities would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“NUTASS remains firmly committed to the welfare, safety, dignity and protection of every Taraba student,” the statement said.
The union added that it would continue to engage relevant authorities responsibly and constructively until appropriate measures were taken to restore lasting peace and security.
It consequently urged students and residents to remain vigilant while avoiding acts capable of worsening the situation.
“Our voices have been heard. The government has stepped in. Let us remain calm and allow justice to take its course,” NUTASS said.
