In a landmark event that showcased the power of technology education, QUEAREX Technology Empowerment Foundation has successfully concluded a two-day AI and Robotics Competition at Government Secondary School Kubwa, Abuja.
The AI and Robotics Competition with the theme, “Engineering young minds for the future workspace,” was held in celebration of International Coding Week.
The event brought together over 100 students from various schools across Abuja, offering a unique platform for young learners to engage in hands-on AI and robotics challenges while exploring how coding can be used to solve real-world problems.
The competition emphasized creativity, collaboration, and practical application of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) skills, focusing on using AI and robotics to address real-world challenges in Nigeria.
The event included engaging workshops, coding challenges, and robotics projects that allowed students to work collaboratively in teams, competing to create innovative tech-based solutions.
The Director General of QUEAREX Tech Empowerment Foundation, Sunday Agbo, addressing the importance of preparing youth for the future, expressed enthusiasm for the impact the event could have on young minds.
“Our goal with this initiative is to inspire a new generation of Nigerian students to think critically and creatively about technology. By giving them a foundational understanding of AI and robotics, we aim to ignite a passion for learning and open up exciting new career possibilities,” he said.
“As the world increasingly embraces technology, we believe it is crucial to ensure that Nigerian students are equipped to participate fully in this digital age. We are committed to providing the tools, guidance, and support they need to develop their talents and solve real-world challenges.
“This event aligns with the recent directive from the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) to integrate robotics and AI into the country’s basic education curriculum.
“With AI identified as a cost-effective tool to help achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, there is significant potential for Nigeria to leverage emerging technologies to reduce inequality and bolster economic growth.”
Throughout the two-day event, participants designed and built robots and developed AI-driven models, including a “Smart School Attendant,” a “Robotic Delivery Car,” a “Traffic Light” and an “Automated Throw Pillow”, presenting their solutions before a panel of judges comprising educators, tech experts, and industry leaders.
Winning teams demonstrated remarkable ingenuity, tackling challenges that ranged from education, environmental conservation to efficient agricultural systems and public safety.
The top three teams, Government Secondary School Kubwa came first, Africa Child came second and Amazing High School came third and they all received awards, certificates, and special recognition for their outstanding achievements in AI and robotics.
