UP NEXT (INTERVIEW): Music Is A Tough Hustle For Upcoming Artistes – Weiser

One of the new cats buzzing in the growing Nigerian Afrobeats scene is Adekunle Boluwatife Oluwagbemileke who goes by the stage name Weiser. He has evolved from an ordinary street music act to emerge on the stables of Hydeli Records under which he is now having his music tutelage. He is subtly taking the Nigerian music industry by storm with his unique spiced up Afropop sound. In this interview, Weiser speaks about his sojourn into music career and Hydeli Records that manages his music career.

What actually influenced your desire to become a musician?

Growing up, I developed a strong passion through listening to music and I fell in love with music listening to dope artistes like P-Square, Olamide, 9ice, Wizkid and a few Gospel artists who actually made me love music and increased my interest in singing.

How did you eventually find your way into music?

As a young artist that is just coming up in the industry, I kept the hustle grinding and HYDELI RECORDS eventually came through for me. They introduced me to the music industry on a larger platform.

Have you released any songs?

I released an EP last December titled LOGRHYTHM. That body of work had 8 beautiful tracks.

How can you describe your type of music?

My type of music is quite unique and a new flavor of spiced up Afropop with a new unique tune.

What differentiate you from other artistes and what do you consider to be your selling point?

Like I said earlier, the spice I added to Afropop with the unique tune differentiates me from other artistes.

Some musicians have music acts they view as idols or mentors, do you have such?

Yes, I do, I have mentors. The likes of Qdot, Olamide, Seyi Vibez, Zinoleesky and Young John. These are people that inspire the way I sing.

How were your growing up years like and how did they influence your kind of music?

I grew up listening to mostly gospel artistes like Tope Alabi, Esther Igbekele, etc. Their danceable songs made me love music as a kid and made me want to do music too.

Can you share with us your educational and family background?

I studied an affiliated course in OAU-Ile Ife where I bagged a diploma in Applied Aviation Science, I then went ahead to Study Biological Sciences in Adeleke University, Ede where I bagged A Bachelor’s Degree in Biology.

I was born to a family of 5 but I lost a sister in 2014.

You must have faced some challenges while trying to climb the ladder of music; can you shed light on some of them?

Of course I had challenges. Challenges like not having enough funds to pay my producer, bloggers, etc. Music is a tough hustle for upcoming artistes. I’ll go to shows, beg to perform. There was a time one of my former producer back then told me to come for a show, I got there and he snubbed me immediately we got there, I started hustling to perform on my own, the MC kept telling me to calm down until everyone left, only two people were left when the MC later called me to perform.

When you compose your music, what drives your lyrics and messages?

The situation around me drives my music and greatly influences my songs.

Do you have any artiste you’re looking forward to working with in Nigeria and on the international scene?

I would really like top acts like Seyi Vibez, Olamide, Davido and Wizkid to jump on my song and give me a feature.

How is your relationship with the music label in charge of your music career?

The label in charge of my music career has been so active and supportive, I’ve never had any reason to complain, they’re like a family to me. God bless the Chairman of the label Dr.Taye Olabode, the management and staff of HYDELI RECORDS worldwide.

Talking about dressing styles, most musicians have preferences, what’s your preferred style of dressing?

I’m not the type of person that loves rugged dressing, I prefer something simple and classy, like the Kizz Daniel type of style.

Where do you see yourself in the next five years in terms of your music career?

I see myself becoming a mega star with high ratings. An A list artiste. That’s every young artiste’s dream and I’m confident that it will surely happen because I’m putting in the work.
