Atletico Madrid have dumped Bayern Munich out of the Champions League to return to the final for second time in three seasons.
Diego Simeone’s men put in a disciplined display in the second leg of their semi-final qualifier to shatter Pep Guardiola’s dream of leaving Bayern with the coveted trophy.
Having defeated Bayern by a goal in the first leg at the Vincente Calderon in Madrid, Atletico needed a draw to qualify.
But a first half goal by Xabi Alonso put the Madrid side on the back foot. In the second half, however, the doggedness that has characterised Atletico under Simeone was on display with Antoine Griesman scoring a crucial away goal.
A Robert Lewandowski strike threw open the tie with Bayern needing a goal to qualify. But even a missed penalty by a reborn Fernando Torres could not stop Atletico from clinging to the 2-1 score line and progressing on away goals.
Atletico would now face the winner of the tie between Real Madrid and Manchester City at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday with a repeat of the final two years ago very much a possibility.
