10 makeup tips we learnt from Mario Kim k’s MUA
Including a genius eyebrow trick
When Kim Kardashian’s favourite makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, came to London to teach a master class at Harrods we couldn’t not be there. Two hours and seven pages of notes later, here are the most important things we learnt…
1. Primers aren’t necessary
Face primer and eye shadow primer are daily essentials for most people, but according to Mario they’re both steps you can skip in your routine. Rather than using a face primer, Mario preps the face, neck and chest with an emollient moisturiser. This stops your makeup looking cakey when you apply powder.
2.Don’t apply foundation under your eyes
Eye shadow “fall out” is one of the most annoying things to happen when you do a smoky eye. To help combat it, Mario applies foundation everywhere except under the eyes. That way, once you’ve applied your eye shadow you can easily clean any fall out with a makeup wipe. Once your eye shadow is done, go back and finish your foundation and concealer.
3. A Beauty Blender should be your best friend
Mario loves his and you should too. After applying foundation with a brush, Mario goes back in with a damp Beauty Blender to removes any excess foundation, which gives a more natural effect and makes sure foundation is fully blended.
4. Use two shades for your eyebrows
To get a naturally full looking brow, Mario uses a lighter eyebrow pencil in the inner corners and a darker eyebrow pencil for the outer corners.
5. Invest in baby shampoo and tea tree oil
The best combination for cleaning your makeup brushes, apparently. Not that Mario cleans his own of course!
6. You can never have enough eye liner
Mario loves to layer eyeliner, in fact after the 6th layer we lost count. He starts by smudging a dark brown pencil eyeliner, then he adds a black pencil before finishing with liquid.
7. Breathe in through your nose
This stops your eyes watering when applying eye makeup.
8. Contour is actually meh
Don’t tell Kim but Mario admitted he doesn’t really like contour that much. He said: “I know everyone calls me the contour king but I’m really not. The extreme contour you see on YouTube and Instagram is not realistic for real life.”
9. But if you are a contour fan, that’s ok
After that bombshell, Mario gave some tips for all you contour addicts: if you contour your nose, make sure you use a colour that is lighter than the contour colour you used on the rest of your face. Ok? Good.
10. There is such a thing as an individual eyelash curler
Mario uses an amazing gadget that helps bond false eyelashes with your actual eyelashes. It’s also great if you have smaller eyes, or just want to curl the outer corner of your lashes.
