Youths Get Training In Climate Education

Youths have been trained on the importance of climate action and promotion of sustainable development practices in Nigeria.

The two-day training workshop was held in Lagos recently.

The initiative tagged: “Climate Education: Building Youths’ Response to Climate Change”, gave youths an opportunity to discuss climate issues peculiar to Lagos and ways on how to combat it.

Dignitaries including, Director Climate Department, Lagos State, Mr. Bankole Micheal; Adebowale Tolulope (Representative from LASEPA), and others were in attendance.

The experts unanimously encouraged the participants to take cognisance of their environment and be charged to take climate action.

In Lagos, over 80 participants attended the training, and in total, 600 young persons in Southwest Nigeria will get educated on climate action.

Co-founder of the International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI), Olumide Idowu explained that the training has helped influence the activities of young climate activists, and in turn, they are impacting their local communities by driving climate action.

Idowu, a recipient of the 2022 Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund, noted that Climate Education is key, especially in finding solutions to climate change issues.

He said: “We’ve made the training a locally-led climate conversation, we are helping young activists take action within their immediate environment. We’ve trained the participants on how to take action in their respective communities.

“The support came in from Alumni Engagement Innovation Support Fund under the U.S. Mission in Nigeria. Across the states, we’ve been able to get the government’s attention, especially in knowing our solutions to climate issues. From Osun, Kwara, Ekiti, Oyo states respectively, they have shown interest in climate action”.

“Climate change is upon us already which is why planting the seed in these young people is very timely, and it is a seed that will generate in no time because these young ones will take charge and make adjustments.”

The participants were equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to make informed decisions about climate change.
