Joseph Yamin, an Ashanti Regional Chairman hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the Party’s upcoming elections has stated that they will force His Exellency Nana Addo to make the Voters ID Card eligible for use in registering for the new Ghana Card.
Government started the issuance of the new Ghana Card this year. According to the National Identification Authority (NIA), one can only use his/her passport or a birth certificate to register to get his/her Ghana Card. As such the Voter’s ID card will not enable a person to get the Ghana Card.
The NIA says there are a lot of people who are not Ghanaians but have crossed the border from neighboring countries and possess the Voter’s ID Card. They believe even though the Voter’s ID has been used to Identify Ghanaians in the past, it is necessary to use this opportunity to clean the system.
Since the NIA made that information public, the opposition and a section of Ghanaians have made a strong case against it, arguing that the Voter’s ID gave power to the President so it should qualify to be used in registering for the Ghana Card.
Mr. Joseph Yamin and Members of the NDC in the Ashanti Region today took to the streets to protest against the exclusion of the voters ID card in the registration of the Ghana Card. The Ashanti Regional Chairman aspirant in an address assured that they will go to every length for the President to make the voter’s ID acceptable.
“We will force Nana Addo to recognize every Ghanaian as a Ghanaian because it is every Ghanaian that made him sit where he is sitting today. If he is not ready we are ready to make him recognize every Ghanaian and that is why we met here at Obuasi to send a signal to them (The NPP) that we are ready to face them to ensure that every Ghanaian is recognized and registered as a Ghanaian”, Joseph Yamin said.
He also observes that once there are a section of the Ghanaian populace asking the Presidnet and his administration to make the use of the card possible, then they have no option than to listen to the cries of the people.
“Nana Addo Dankwa and the NPP have no option than to listen to Ghanaians because it is not only them who are Ghanaians. We are also Ghanaians. So if a section of Ghanaians are saying that they should include the Voter’s ID card in registering for the Ghana card, then he has to ensure it is done”.
He further assured that they will take power from the NPP come 2020.
