“I call myself a beauty maximalist,” says green beauty guru Tata Harper of her more-is-more skincare philosophy. “More products, more ingredients, and more steps in a routine will offer maximum results for your skin.” Her latest over-the-top skincare ritual? The triple cleanse.
While the K-Beauty inspired double-cleanse—a cleansing oil or micellar water followed by a foaming cleanser—became part of virtually every skincare junkie’s regime in 2018, it may, however, fall one step short of thoroughly removing makeup, sunscreen, and pollution. “Cleansing is very important to your skin health,” says L.A.–based cosmetic dermatologist Harold Lancer, M.D., whose devotees include Jennifer Lopez and Victoria Beckham. “The skin is an organ of absorption and your face is exposed to many harmful pollutants, chemicals, and bacteria, which are absorbed through the skin and cause uncontrolled inflammation.” With pollution levels on the rise, and cosmetic formulas becoming longer lasting, making sure that your skin is meticulously clean therefore warrants time, attention, and a third step for luck.
“It’s very easy for makeup, even non-toxic brands, as well as sunscreen to build up and clog pores, disabling the layers of skin from easily releasing dead skin cells and creating new cells,” says Reiki master and holistic facialist Julie Civiello Polier, who advocates stretching out the process and creating a mini spa experience at home. “Including a third cleanse only adds five minutes to a nightly routine and is an exquisite way to energetically release the day and become present.” Here, a host of skincare experts share their triple cleansing tips and products.
