The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, Brig-Gen Shuaibu Ibrahim, has explained why martial arts was introduced into the corps members’ orientation camp course content.
Ibrahim disclosed this in his welcome message to the intending corps members who deployed to camp on Wednesday across the country.
The DG noted that, in the last few years, the NYSC scheme had recorded a paradigm shift in the orientation course content, stating that it aligned with the nation’s prevailing security and economic realities.
“This shift witnessed the introduction of martial arts training into the course content so as to equip corps members with basic self-defense skills,” Ibrahim said.
Counselling corps members to take the martial arts training seriously, he added, “It will be wise to take this training seriously in order to enhance your personal security.”
He, however, assured that the NYSC is “always in constant touch with the various security agencies” to ensure that that corps members’ security is not compromised.
