
Chairman, Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU), Prof. Lawrence Ezemonye has charged universities to produce future-ready graduates for the changing world.
Ezemonye spoke as a guest lecturer at the 2025 public lecture of the Social Science Academy of Nigeria (SSAN) in Abuja where he called for radical transformation of the university education to address the challenges facing the sector.
The varsity don emphasised the need for Nigerian universities to adapt to the changing times and to prioritise relevance, quality, sustainability, integrity, innovation, and inclusivity.
According to him, this would enable universities to produce graduates who are equipped to meet the demands of the 21st century.
The lecture with the theme: “A New Vision for University Education in Nigeria: Rhetorics, Paradox and Metaphor,” highlighted how universities can overcome challenges of funding, adopt new innovations and other initiatives to survive.
Ezemonye said: “The world is changing rapidly, and universities must adapt to prepare future-ready graduates.
“We are not just here to diagnose problems. We must envision a radical transformation.”
The Don identified challenges facing the university system to include: infrastructure deficits, overcrowding in lecture halls, traditional laboratories, and unresolved staff agreements among others facing university education.
