UNN and others Emerge Top Winners at 4th West Africa University Games
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and Ekiti State University, Ekiti (ESUT) among others have emerged winners at the two games of the 4th edition of West Africa University Football and Hockey Championships hosted by the University of Nigeria Nsukka.
The games which attracted 26 universities across West Africa commenced on the 17th October with an opening remarks from the Vice Chancellor of the host University of Nigeria Nsukka, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, who welcomed athletes and guests to the University, stating that the idea to host the games is based on the University’s philosophy of restoring the dignity of man.
The competitions started with a football match between the University of Nigeria (UNN) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). The visiting team lost the opening match by a lone goal to host UNN.
However, it was the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) team who took the shine in the male football category. The ESUT team beat the host (UNN) 4-3 on penalties in a controversial Semi-final match, then went ahead to beat University of Calabar (UNICAL) in the final match.

- Federal University of Technology, Minna (FutMinna) – Male Hockey Bronze Trophy Winners.
- Bayero University Kano (BUK) – Male Football Fair Play Award.
- University of Ibadan – Female Hockey Fair Play Award.
- Obot Ubom-Abasi (Team UNN) – Highest Goal Scorer (Male Football) and MVP of the Tournament.
- Jide Falomo (Team OAU) – Highest Goal Scorer (Male Hockey).
- Innocent Akpan (Team OAU) – Most Valuable Player (Male Hockey).
- Tony Agu (Team UI) – Most Valuable Player (Female Hockey).
