UDUS Welcomes 6,000 Students At Matriculation Ceremony

In what has been described as a vibrant display of academic tradition and cultural pride, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto officially welcomed 5,859 newly admitted students for the 2024/2025 academic session during its matriculation ceremony held on Wednesday.

While addressing the new students, the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof Umar Aliyu, emphasised the importance of discipline, dedication, and compliance with the university’s rules and regulations. He described these principles as critical to thriving in the academic environment.

However, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Bashir Garba, extended his appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his steadfast support for education in Nigeria. He also acknowledged the backing of the governments of Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara States, as well as that of the religious leaders in the region.

Garba charged the matriculating students to pursue excellence and uphold the values of the university. “Today marks the beginning of a journey that can shape your future. Focus on your studies, remain disciplined, and make your parents, guardians, and this institution proud,” he advised the new intakes.

Highlighting the rich legacy of the university, which was formerly known as the University of Sokoto before its renaming in 1988, Garba noted that UDUS stands among Nigeria’s seven oldest universities.

He encouraged students to embrace challenges as stepping stones to growth, reminding them that “resilience and determination will see them through.”

He also encouraged the students “to take full advantage of the university’s resources, including its state-of-the-art libraries, research facilities, and dedicated faculty. In addition to academic pursuit,” even as he urged them to also take active involvement in extracurricular activities, credible student organisations, and community service to foster all-round development.

“You are now part of a legacy of excellence. The journey won’t always be smooth, but the tools for your success are all here. Use them wisely,” the don further urged the matriculants.

Arewa PUNCH reports that UDUS, which now boasts 17 faculties, continues to solidify its status as one of Nigeria’s foremost institutions of higher learning.
