President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu have congratulated Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly called Tems, on winning the Best African Music Performance award at the 67th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday night.
In a statement yesterday in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised Tems for her exceptional artistry, describing her latest achievement as another moment of pride for Nigeria on the global stage.
“On behalf of the entire nation, I commend Tems for her unique artistry, which has once again brought pride to Nigeria,” the President said.
He also celebrated the growing influence of young and multi-talented Nigerian musicians, acknowledging their role in pushing Afrobeats to international prominence.
“From Africa to Antarctica, Asia to Australia, Europe to the Americas, the Nigerian music industry, particularly Afrobeats, has become a source of national pride, promoting a sense of identity and self-expression while uniting people across borders,” he said.
Beyond Tems’ victory, President Tinubu also extended his congratulations to other Nigerian artists who received Grammy nominations this year, including Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, Lojay, Davido, and Burna Boy.
He eulogised them for contributing to Nigeria’s creative industry, which continues to gain global recognition.
“You are all inspirations and role models to many young people. The nation remains deeply grateful for your contributions to music, job creation, and tourism promotion,” President Tinubu said, wishing them continued success in their careers.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s entertainment industry, recognising its role in cultural diplomacy and economic growth.
Also, Governor Sanwo-Olu congratulated Tems for winning the Best African Music Performance award with her hit song: “Love Me JeJe.”
In a statement shared via his X handle, Sanwo-Olu described Tems’ victory as a groundbreaking achievement and a milestone that reflects her exceptional artistry and dedication.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Temilade Openiyi, @temsbaby, for winning the Best African Music Performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards with her song ‘Love Me JeJe,’” the governor wrote.
Sanwo-Olu emphasised the significance of the win, noting that it marked Tems as the first Nigerian artist to win in the category.
“This historic achievement marks her as the first Nigerian artist to win in this category, showcasing her exceptional talent and dedication,” he added.
The governor also lauded other Nigerian artistes who received Grammy nominations, including Burna Boy, Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, and Davido.
