Temilade Openiyi, popularly known by her stage name Tems, a Nigerian singer won the 67th Grammy Awards’ Best African Music Performance category.
She won with her song Love Me JeJe, surpassing Burna Boy’s Higher, Asake’s MMS with Wizkid, Chris Brown’s Sensational with Davido and Lojay, and Yemi Alade’s Tomorrow.
The 67th Grammy Awards took place at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles on Sunday.
Tems has now won two Grammys. Tems received three nominations at this year’s Grammys, bringing her career total to eight.
She was also nominated for Best Global Music Album for Born in the Wild and Best R&B Song for Burning.
Her winning song, Love Me Jeje sampled the hit song of same title originally done by US based Nigerian Afropop artiste, Seyi Sodimu. Her first Grammy (2023 Grrmmy Award for Best Melodic Rap Perfomance) was for the song Wait For You by Future which also featured the Canadian rapper, Drake.
Dedicates Winning To Mum
She expressed gratitude to her mother for her unwavering support and love.
She said: “Wow, dear God. Thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team.
“Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you ma because she has really done a lot for me and my brother.
“Happy birthday mum. And I want to thank my team. Muyiwa, Wale, my beautiful stylist, and lovely girls… I love you guys.
“Thank you so much. To God be the glory. Honestly, He has changed my life so much.”
Her rise has been nothing short of inspirational having started as a digital marketer before quitting her job in 2018 to focus on her music.
She released her debut single ‘Mr. Rebel’ the same year after teaching herself out to produce music.
Her career hit a major milestone in 2020 when she made a decisive contribution to Wizkid’s hit record ‘Essence’ off his multi-award-winning album ‘Made In Lagos’.
The song would rocket her to international mainstream success that culminated in collaboration with Drake, Beyonce, and Future for which she won her first Grammy.
