The academic and non-academic staff of Taraba State University, Jalingo, have accepted a N500m offer from the Taraba State Government to address issues that led to the ongoing strike at the institution.
The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities at the institution, Joshua Garba Mbave, confirmed the development on Monday, saying the unions had conditionally agreed to the offer made by Governor Agbu Kefas.
According to him, the workers will formally sign an agreement with the state government before suspending the industrial action.
“We have accepted the N500m offer by Governor Agbu Kefas, but with the condition that an agreement must be signed with the government so that we are assured the promises will be honoured,” Mbave said.
He added that the strike would be called off immediately after the agreement was signed.
Arewa PUNCH reports that the university community had recently been paralysed by a strike embarked upon by both academic and non-academic staff over outstanding welfare issues, including salary-related concerns and other conditions of service.
The industrial action disrupted academic activities at the state-owned university in Jalingo, leaving thousands of students stranded and forcing the institution to suspend lectures.
Mbave, however, clarified that the N500m intervention by the state government was meant for all staff of the university and not solely members of ASUU.
“I wish to make it clear that the N500m is not only for ASUU members. It is meant for both academic and non-academic staff of the university,” he said.
The planned agreement between the unions and the state government is expected to pave the way for the resumption of academic activities at the institution.
