Students Vie For N2m Prize, Laptops In National Essay Competition

A total cash prize of N2m, laptops, and desktop computers are up for grabs at the 20th edition of the Mike Okonkwo National Essay Competition for secondary school students in Nigeria.

This year’s edition coincides with the 80th birthday of the Presiding Bishop of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, Dr Mike Okonkwo, who instituted the essay contest.

June 20 is set as the deadline for willing participants to send in their essay entries on the theme, “The Nigeria of Our Dreams: Today’s Reality and a Responsible Pathfinder.”

A statement signed by Rev. Anthony Samuel of the Corporate Affairs Department held that students are encouraged to submit essays of no more than 1,200 words via email to essay@trem.org, in a Word document format, including personal and school details.

“As a special 20th edition, the prizes have been significantly enhanced.

“The first prize winner will receive N1,000,000, a laptop, and a plaque, while their school will be awarded a desktop computer and a trophy.

“The first and second runners-up will receive N600,000 and N400,000, respectively, along with laptops, plaques, and desktop computers for their schools,” the statement read.

Speaking, Okonkwo said the competition is aimed at empowering the next generation of thinkers and leaders.

He said the yearly competition continues to shape young minds and encourage students to think critically about governance, leadership, and national development.

“For 20 years, this platform has not only inspired students but has also contributed to shaping national discourse. Over the years, the competition has evolved into a prestigious platform that challenges students to engage with national issues.

“As we celebrate this milestone and my 80th birthday, I am more convinced than ever that young people hold the key to Nigeria’s transformation,” Okonkwo said.
