House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Aviation, Nnolim Nnaji, has condemned picketing of Air Peace counters in Lagos by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) offcials, thus disrupting flights to Owerri, Imo State, on Wednesday.
The action, a retaliation to last May Day face-off with Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, prevented workers from observing May Day.
Nnaji expressed shock a matter, which happened in Owerr,i could make union leaders invade Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.
He reiterated airports are security zones which shouldn’t be exposed to such breaches, saying the action could affect the airport’s certification.
The lawmaker reminded them the new Civil Aviation Act categorised them under essential service providers, stressing dialogue is their means of resolving disputes.
He urged Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to prevent a recurrence, and counselled the unions to avoid carrying out grievances to airports in future.
