Red Bull Music Academy Weekender in Dubai announced

The city’s first event will welcome more than 30 acts in April including Earl Sweatshirt and Danny Krivit

Rapper Earl Sweatshirt and DJ Danny Krivit are two of more than 30 international and regional musicians who will come together over the course of four days in April in Dubai, as part of the city’s first Red Bull Music Academy Weekender.

The weekender will kick off on April 12 at MusicHall with the world premiere of the film Hiwar (Arabic for ‘dialogue’) by multimedia artist and Kuwaiti musician Zahed Sultan. Here, Sultan explores the bridges between traditional pearl-diving music in the Gulf and contemporary music trends. He features modern and folk musicians from the UAE.

On April 13, The Black Madonna, a DJ known for her anti-establishment philosophies, will take over the decks at On42, Media One Hotel. Electronic acts Moodymann, Siamak Amidi and Shemroon complete the line-up.

Meanwhile, the Steigenberger Hotel will host Axel Boman’s creations on the same night, as well as DeWalta & Shannon, Peggy Gou, Deep Like’s Sam Farsio and JC Pinto, Kode9, Ikonika, DJ Earl and Esserai.

On April 14, a 6am meditation session held by Dubai-based Pierre Ravan will take place at Kite Beach. This will be followed by a performance by Julianna Barwick, known for her vocal percussions and improvisations. Between 2-4pm, at the Flipside, Swedish house music DJ Alex Boman will give a lecture.

At night, Dubai Design District (d3) will host a party headlined by California rapper Earl Sweatshirt. Joining him will be hip-hop act Danny Brown and Afro-Nuyorican Princess Nokia.

Canadian electronic songwriter Jessy Lanza, Stones Throw artist Knxwledge, Dubai-based band Muhaisnah Four and Tunisian beat-smith Aeli complete the line-up.

On April 15, Danny Krivit will headline the final weekender event on the decks of Tap House at Club Vista Mare on The Palm. Australian act Andras, broken beat and nu-jazz producer Volcov and Dubai acts Megadon Betamax and James Locksmith will join him.

Starting April 7, a photo exhibition dubbed Beyond the Noise that captures music in a different form will be held at d3.
