Outstanding Achievements Celebrated At WAEC’s 73rd Annual Council Meeting

The 73rd Annual Council Meeting of The West African Examinations Council, WAEC concluded with a celebration of academic excellence and the recognition of exceptional students in the sub-region. The meeting, held from March 17 to March 21, 2025, was graced by the presence of Liberia’s President, His Excellency Joseph Nyumah Boakai, who opened the proceedings and acknowledged the council’s long-standing commitment to educational assessment in West Africa.

Among the highlights of the meeting was the awarding of the prestigious WAEC International Excellence Award to three exceptional Ghanaian students who achieved remarkable scores in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Master David Nii Commey Ankrah took home the 1st Prize, while Master Henschel Tabi Frempong-Manso and Master Benedict Ofori Debrah were awarded 2nd and 3rd Prizes, respectively. These scholars stood out from an impressive pool of 2,455,063 candidates from The Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone, marking a significant achievement in educational performance.

Furthermore, Master David Nii Commey Ankrah not only secured the top position in the WAEC International Excellence Award but also received the Augustus Bandele Oyediran Award for the Best Candidate in West Africa for 2024, highlighting his exceptional capabilities and dedication to academic success.

In addition to celebrating the achievements of students, the council also conferred the prestigious title of Distinguished Friend of Council on Mrs. Hawah Sharon GollKotchi, a notable citizen of Liberia, for her invaluable contributions to the objectives of WAEC.

The event underscored the council’s commitment to fostering educational excellence and a platform for collaboration among member countries, as reiterated by Liberia’s Minister of Education, Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah. She emphasized the importance of ensuring the credibility and accessibility of WAEC’s examinations while addressing critical issues that impact education across the region.

As the gathering concluded, WAEC’s Chairman, Prof. Thomas B. R. Yormah, expressed gratitude to the Government and the delegates for their dedication and efforts throughout the meeting. The next Annual Council Meeting is set to be hosted by the Government of Ghana in March 2026, where the tradition of celebrating academic excellence and advancing educational policies in West Africa will continue.
