The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has urged employers not to reject National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to serve in their establishments.
The FCTA urged employers to provide the enabling environment that would enable corps members to perform their responsibilities to their fatherland in the course of their service.
The Permanent Secretary in the FCTA, Olusade Adesola, stated this during the closing ceremony of this year’s Batch “B” Stream One orientation course at the NYSC FCT Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja.
Olusade, whose address was read by the Acting Mandate Secretary for FCT Social Development Secretariat, Mrs. Justina Pawa, appealed to corps members to contribute their quota to national development by promoting the spirit of oneness, mutual co-existence, national unity and cohesion as well as peace and harmony in the country.
The permanent secretary praised the NYSC management and other stakeholders for their invaluable contributions in mentoring corps members for leadership roles and self-empowerment through its Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme (SAED).
He said: “I urge the organised private sector (OPS) to open up its doors to accept corps members that will be posted to them to undergo the one-year compulsory service.
“It is expected that no company and organisation operating within the shores of Nigeria should flagrantly reject any corps member that is officially posted to them.
“As a mark of patriotism and responsibility to national development, the organised private sector should consider the NYSC scheme as an opportunity to give back to the society, as a platform to demonstrate its corporate social responsibility (CSR).”
Also, the NYSC yesterday advised corps members deployed to various places for their mandatory one-year national service to respect the cultures of their host communities.
The scheme’s Borno State Coordinator Mohammed Adamu-Jiya gave the advice during the closing ceremony of this year’s Batch “B” Stream One orientation in Katsina, Katsina State.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia announced a special cash package for NYSC members deployed in the state while his Adamawa State counterpart, Alhaji Ahmadu Fintiri ordered immediate fencing of the orientation camp in the to tighten security around the corps members.
The corps members posted to Borno State have been camping in Katsina State due to the security challenges in the former.
Adamu-Jiya said: “In keeping with the objectives of the scheme, you are expected to integrate into your host communities while also appreciating and respecting the culture of the people.”
He hailed members for participating in camp activities “and exhibiting high level of discipline”.
Governor Alia, who promised to provide an enabling environment for the corps members, announced that irrespective of their places of primary assignment, each corps member posted to the state would get ¦ 15,000 monthly from the state government, while medical doctors would be paid ¦ 100,000 each.
Niger State Governor Umar Mohammed Bago said any employer who rejects an NYSC member would face the full wrath of the law.
