NUC, Blackboard LMS Push For Data-Driven Digital Learning In Universities

The National Universities Commission recently hosted a strategic engagement with the Anthology Blackboard team to explore the adoption of the Blackboard Learn Learning Management System across the country’s universities.

The initiative is in line with the continuous push for hybrid learning in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

The meeting offered an opportunity for officials of Blackboard to showcase the potential of LMS technology to transform teaching, learning, and administrative oversight in Nigerian universities.

Michael Ladipo, the Country Director and Head of Business, West Africa, Pole Global Marketing, the implementing partner for Anthology Blackboard in Nigeria, presented an overview of the Blackboard Learn platform

He emphasised its hybrid learning capabilities, which combine physical classroom instruction with online delivery.

Ladipo said, “Blackboard Learn empowers institutions to maintain flexibility in teaching while delivering structured, scalable, and data-informed learning experiences.

“Our discussions show that Nigeria is ready to embrace hybrid learning at scale. The platform provides regulators and universities with actionable insights to drive continuous improvement without compromising academic autonomy.”

The team assured that the Blackboard Learn platform was created in alignment with national objectives on quality assurance, accreditation monitoring, and academic performance management.

A highlight of the engagement was a demonstration of Blackboard Illuminate, an integrated analytics and reporting solution that enables institutions to track learning outcomes, monitor faculty and student performance, and generate real-time reports.

Nicolas Albouze, Vice President, Middle East & Africa, Anthology Blackboard, explained that the system allows universities to create customisable dashboards and adaptive reports tailored to institutional needs, fostering data-driven decision-making at all levels.

During the live demonstration, Lincoln Benson showcased the generation of real-time institutional reports, highlighting the platform’s capability to support monitoring and evaluation across campuses.

Stakeholders were shown how Blackboard Learn can facilitate academic planning, identify learning gaps, and optimise resource allocation through detailed analytics.

NUC’s Acting Director, Patrick EgbeUkah, raised questions on cost implications, sustainability, and the framework for long-term collaboration between the regulatory body and the implementing partner.

The Anthology team reassured participants that the rollout would align fully with NUC policies and that implementation costs would be minimal compared to the benefits of improved learning outcomes and operational efficiency.

The discussion also highlighted the importance of continuous faculty training, change management, and knowledge transfer to ensure the successful adoption of digital learning technologies across Nigerian universities.
