Osun State University has mandated students to pass entrepreneurship courses as a requirement to obtain their degree.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof Clement Adebooye, disclosed this at Osogbo main campus during the 2023 Entrepreneurship and Innovation Training Programme with the theme: 21st Century Entrepreneurship Skills and Economic Sustainability: Challenges and Way Out, on Monday.
He noted that no serious unit was attached to the course but students must pass it before they can graduate from the university.
According to him, the university aims to train students to have ideas in different skills so that they can establish any company of their choice in the future.
“This entrepreneurship program is compulsory for all students. If they fail it, they won’t graduate. With the training, you can launch yourself into the competitive world and find a higher ground for yourself.
“Our students who have gone through this program have become very successful even while in school. We groom them so that they can know what it takes them to establish their company. Things will happen that we have never seen before and that is the reason why we are training these young ones,” Adebooye stated.
The guest speaker, Prof Akeem Salami, who explained that capital is the last requirement to be an entrepreneur, encouraged the students to be innovative and start doing something.
He posited that African countries are too reliant on certificates which he said will not help in becoming rich, insisting that only an entrepreneur can be an employer of labor whereas those with two Doctor of Philosophy will continue to be job seekers.
The father of the day and mother of the day, Alh AbduWasiu Adejumo, Fortunate Bread, and Yeye Modupe Adeleke-Sanni, advised the students to get acquainted with the reality on the ground and prepare to meet the challenges after their graduation.
