NANS Suspends Protest, Backs Tax Reform Laws

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called off its proposed nationwide protest over the recently enacted Tax Reform Laws, affirming the authenticity of the legislations as officially released by the National Assembly.

The decision followed extensive deliberations at the maiden edition of the NANS Expanded National Executive Council (ENEC) meeting, tagged: “National Executive Council and Structural Stakeholders Forum 2026 on the Tax Reform Acts”, held in Abuja.

In a communiqué issued by NANS President, Comrade Olushola Oladoja, the students’ body stated that after presentations and engagements with key stakeholders, the ENEC resolved that the Tax Reform Laws were a deliberate and well-intentioned policy aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s economy and institutional revenue frameworks.

It said the laws contained clear provisions designed to protect low-income earners and vulnerable citizens, while ensuring that high-income earners contributed more equitably to national revenue.

The council emphasised that the laws did not target the poor, but rather enhanced social protection and prevented the tax burden from resting disproportionately on a few individuals.

It further noted that the reform introduced a centralised revenue generation system with a transparent sharing formula among the federal, state and local governments.
