NANS South-West Issues Ultimatum Over Power Crisis, Threatens Protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government over the persistent electricity crisis affecting campuses across the region, threatening to mobilise students for mass protest if the situation is not urgently addressed.

The student body, in a statement issued on Monday by the Coordinator of NANS South-West Zone D, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, popularly known as Billioncodes, expressed strong dissatisfaction over what it described as the continued failure of the Ministry of Power to resolve the country’s worsening electricity challenges.

NANS accused the Ministry of Power, under the leadership of the Minister, Bayo Adelabu, of failing to deliver meaningful improvements in the power sector, noting that students across the Southwest have been subjected to prolonged periods of darkness that have negatively impacted their academic activities.

According to the association, the recurring blackouts have crippled learning conditions in many campuses, leaving students to study under difficult circumstances while raising serious concerns about safety in hostels and other facilities.

The student body said the situation represents not only a failure of infrastructure but also a failure of leadership, stressing that Nigerian students had expected urgent reforms and decisive action from the ministry to address the country’s electricity challenges.

NANS further called on the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately probe the activities of the Ministry of Power and review its operations, insisting that the current state of the power sector falls short of the expectations of Nigerians.

The association noted that the continued lack of stable electricity supply has forced many students to rely on alternative means such as candles, phone torches, and generators in order to read and prepare for examinations.

Describing the situation as a national embarrassment, the student body warned that the continued neglect of the power sector poses a serious threat to the intellectual development of Nigerian students and undermines efforts to promote education and youth development in the country.

NANS Southwest, therefore, urged the Federal Government to take urgent and decisive action to improve electricity supply and restore confidence in the sector.

The association warned that if the situation remains unresolved in the coming days, it would mobilise students across the Southwest region to embark on peaceful but resolute protests to demand accountability and improved power supply.

The group added that Nigerian students deserve a safe and conducive academic environment, stressing that education cannot thrive in darkness.

NANS also maintained that if the electricity crisis persists without concrete action from the authorities, the Minister of Power may have to step aside in the interest of the nation and the future of Nigerian students.
