The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) South West Zone D has condemned the alleged arrest of Adedoyin Temitope Daniel, a graduate of the former Osun State College of Education (now transitioned to the University of Ilesa, UNILESA) by the management.
This arrest occurred after Daniel protested his prolonged exclusion from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation list.
In a statement issued by NANS Zone D Coordinator, Comrade Josiah Adeyemo, it was highlighted that Adedoyin has fulfilled all academic requirements and received a notification of results.
However, he has allegedly been denied an official confirmation of his eligibility for NYSC, resulting in over two years of denied mobilisation.
Adeyemo described this situation as deliberate and unjust, representing a denial of the rights and futures of citizens.
The NANS Coordinator also accused the Vice Chancellor of UNILESA, Prof. Taiwo Asaolu, of instructing security personnel to physically assault the student.
“More disturbing is the undeniable act of brutality carried out against this student when he peacefully visited the institution to demand answers and assert his rights.
“In a shocking abuse of authority, the Vice-Chancellor directed security personnel to physically assault the student. He was beaten openly, in broad daylight, and sustained serious injuries. This is a direct violation of human dignity and a disgrace to the sanctity of an academic institution.
“This incident is not isolated; it reflects a deeper, systemic breakdown in governance, accountability, and leadership within the institution.
“The continued suppression of the Student Union Government has silenced the collective voice of students, leaving them defenseless against administrative excesses. A functioning union would have served as a mechanism for dialogue and protection, but its deliberate absence exposes students to unchecked oppression.
“Equally troubling is the pattern of financial exploitation masked as administrative policy. Students are compelled to pay ₦5,000 per session for a university portal that remains largely ineffective and unreliable. The institution’s ICT infrastructure, including Wi-Fi services, is grossly inadequate, despite these imposed charges.
“Furthermore, students have been made to pay ₦25,000 for entrepreneurial training programs that have not been delivered. This is a blatant failure of responsibility and raises serious concerns about transparency and the management of student funds.
“The presence of armed security personnel within the academic environment has created an atmosphere of fear and intimidation, fundamentally incompatible with learning and intellectual freedom. The unjustified increment of school fees without any corresponding improvement in infrastructure or student welfare further compounds the hardship faced by students.
“NANS Southwest views these actions as a gross abuse of power and a direct attack on the rights and welfare of Nigerian students. We state without hesitation that the continued intimidation, suppression, and exploitation of students will be firmly resisted,” the statement read.
More so, NANS demands “Immediate mobilization of Adedoyin Temitope Daniel for NYSC without any further delay.
“A thorough and transparent investigation into the assault on the student, with full accountability enforced.
“Immediate reinstatement of the Student Union Government.
“Full disclosure and accountability in the management of all student-related funds.
“Urgent overhaul of the institution’s ICT infrastructure and delivery of all paid services.
“Immediate cessation of all forms of intimidation, harassment, and oppressive practices within the institution.
“Failure to meet these demands will leave NANS Southwest with no option but to escalate its actions. We will not hesitate to mobilize students across the Southwest region to lawfully and persistently occupy the institution with continuous mass actions and protests until justice is served and accountability is achieved. The University of Ilesa must be prepared to answer to the collective voice of Nigerian students.
“Let it be clearly stated: Nigerian students will not be silenced, intimidated, or denied their future. The leadership of NANS Southwest remains resolute and unwavering in its commitment to defend the rights, dignity, and welfare of every student.”
Earlirt, the University in a statement by its Registrar, Funso Ojo denied the report, describing it as inaccurate and misleading.
“The University of Ilesa is yet to graduate its first set of students, as the pioneer cohort admitted in 2023 is currently in their third year of study.
“Available records indicate that the individual referenced in the report completed a programme formerly run by the defunct Osun State College of Education, Ilesa, in affiliation with the University of Ibadan, prior to the establishment of the University of Ilesa.
“Issues relating to his NYSC mobilization are understood to be connected to the regularization of his admission with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), a process that is not directly within the control of the University.
“Notwithstanding, the University, through its Student Affairs Division, has been engaging relevant stakeholders to provide necessary guidance and support toward an amicable resolution of the matter,” the statement read
