MDCN Inducts 74 Sokoto Varsity Medical Graduates

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, on Tuesday, inducted 74 graduates of Medicine and Surgery from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.

The newly inducted doctors comprise 57 males and 17 females,from various states across the country.

Leading the oath-taking and induction ceremony, the Registrar of MDCN, Dr. Fatima Kyari, urged the new medical doctors to view their achievement as a call to serve humanity.

She emphasised the importance of adhering to professional ethics binding on all doctors in Nigeria.

“Medical practice is procedural and hierarchical, built on mutual respect and reciprocity,” Kyari said. “You must embrace the transformative momentum in healthcare service delivery, and remember that this profession is patient-centred. I am confident that your lecturers and tutors have prepared you well for the challenges ahead.”

Kyari also highlighted MDCN’s commitment to expanding medical school intakes and strengthening healthcare delivery in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda.

The Vice-Chancellor of UDUS, Prof. Bashir Garba, reminded the inductees of their responsibilities as doctors, emphasising the values of compassion, lifelong learning, and professionalism.

“This noble profession demands not only deep compassion but also unwavering commitment and dedication,” Garba stated. “As future leaders of healthcare, you bear the weighty responsibility of caring for the sick and vulnerable.”

The vice-chancellor commended the School of Health Sciences for its dedication to excellence and assured continued investments in research and academic development.

The chairman of the occasion and former Vice-Chancellor of UDUS, Prof. Riskuwa Shehu, encouraged the new doctors to uphold professional ethics and urged their families to continue supporting them in their medical journeys.

He described the healthcare sector as evolving, requiring innovative solutions and adherence to high standards.

In his remarks, the Deputy Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Prof. Abdulgafar Jimoh, praised the resilience of the institution and the graduates.

He called on the government and stakeholders to sustain support for medical education and healthcare development.

Also speaking at the event, the Chief of Staff to the Kebbi State Governor, Alhaji Dahiru Maccido, stated that the state government was prioritising healthcare to meet the needs of its citizens.

He revealed that Governor Nasir Idris had approved the recruitment of 500 medical personnel and established a new Kebbi State University Teaching Hospital.

A highlight of the ceremony was the announcement of awards.

 Dr. Yusuf Ahovi emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Doctor, while Dr. Yakubu Mariam was recognised as the Best Female Medical Doctor.

Several inductees expressed their gratitude to their parents, mentors, and the university.

They pledged to use their knowledge to make a positive impact on society.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including the Chief Medical Director of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Prof. Anas Samir; Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Sokoto State, Dr. Faruk Shehu; and other stakeholders from the medical and academic communities.
