Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, Lagos has matriculated 14,893 new students, the highest number in the history of the institution.
This is just as the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, reiterated the commitment of the university to the character development of the students for them to be catalysts for a greater Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.
The VC, who admonished the new students to adhere to the rules and regulations of the university, gave the assurance that LASU is a student-centred institution and that the welfare of the students would always be a top priority.
“Lagos State University is a student centered Institution that fosters the development of generational leaders. As a hub of learning it embodies the spirit of freedom, providing an environment that nurtures growth and excellence.
“However, in LASU, that freedom often comes with equivalent obligations and boundaries. We take pride in training students for life. We are focused on character development of our students. This is based on the hope that when you graduate, you will contribute meaningfully to developmental discourses around the globe. Our objective at the Lagos State University is to produce graduates who will be catalysts to the process of transformation of the state to a Greater Lagos,” she said.
The VC gave the assurance that the security and safety of students was non-negotiable, and urged them to be vigilant and that they should also mind the type of company they keep.
“I must also stress that the university under my watch has zero tolerance for sexual and gender based violence, and that informed our decision to establish the Directorate of Response and Preventive of Sexual and Gender based violence. Do not keep silent when you are harassed or assaulted in any manner. “if you see something, say something”. Show respect to your colleagues and staff in the university to make your stay successful and productive.
“As I said at your orientation programme that your welfare is top on our priority and we will not relent in our efforts to ensure that your learning environment remains conducive and competitive for learning. Please be assured that your security in and around the university is paramount to the university management, hence we have put in place adequate security measures and I plead with you to report any suspicious activities to the university authority for immediate response,” she stated.
She urged the new students to be regular in attending lectures; carry out all their assignments; shun deviant behaviors; avoid indecent dressing; carefully select their friends, as bad friends destroy good habits; adding that the university has zero tolerance for cultism; and that they should avoid examination malpractices.
A total number of 14,893 were admitted out of over 70,000 applicants that subscribed to the university.
Dr Samson Oyefolu gave a pep talk to the students to emphasize the need for them to plan their lives and stay on campus to achieve great results in the end.
