Lagos State Government Issues Flood Alerts For Several Areas

The Lagos State Government has issued a flood alert, cautioning residents in specific areas to remain vigilant as heavy rainfall is expected between August 14 and 18.

The warning was issued in a statement on Tuesday and signed by Lekan Shodeinde, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources.

The state urged residents of Apapa, Badagry, Eti Osa, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Ikoyi, Lagos Island, and Ojo to prepare for very heavy rainfalls that may induce flash flooding during the week and beyond.

The alert is based on information provided by the Flood Emergency Warning System (FEWS) Central Hub of the Federal Ministry of the Environment.

Shodeinde stated the importance of vigilance among residents in the mentioned areas and urged them to be watchful about the rainfall patterns during and after the specified time frame.

He also urged those residing in flood-prone areas and locations situated at lower elevations to prepare for potential evacuation to higher ground until the cessation of the rains.

Shodeinde reiterated that people and motorists must also refrain from wading through floods, especially during rainfalls, as there is a propensity to be washed away by the intensity of the water.

He added that the warning has become necessary to avoid the preventable loss of lives and property that usually accompany such incidents.
