A new Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mohammed Ja’afaru, has been approved for the Federal University of Kashere (FUK) in Gombe State by the university’s Governing Council.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Prof. Williams Aderounmu, following a competitive selection process.
Speaking after the appointment, Prof. Aderounmu said the selection followed clear guidelines, noting that only professors with at least seven years’ experience were eligible to apply.
He explained that candidates were assessed based on their experience, academic output, community service, and performance during the interview. Special consideration was also given to their ability to attract funds for the university through international grants, endowment funds, consultancy services, and other income-generating activities.
The Pro-Chancellor noted that government funding alone is insufficient, making it necessary for the university to be led by individuals capable of sourcing additional revenue.
He confirmed that Prof. Ja’afaru scored higher than the other candidates but did not disclose the exact marks.
He added that 20 highly qualified professors were interviewed for the position and that all were competent to serve as vice-chancellors.
Prof. Ja’afaru is a seasoned lecturer and university administrator who has spent many years at Modibbo Adama University (MAU), Yola. Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), where he oversaw the university’s day-to-day administrative operations.
