The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially commissioned the newly renovated J.F Ade-Ajayi Auditorium at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The Commissioning was held on Thursday, October 10, in a closed-event at the auditorium with dignitaries from the Lagos State Government and UNILAG in attendance.

Speaking through the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, the Governor described the renovation as “a powerful reminder of what visionary leadership and collective effort can accomplish.”

She said that the renovation honours the legacy of the late Professor J.F. Ade. Ajayi, one of Africa’s most revered historians and a former Vice-Chancellor of the institution.

“His name on this building serves as a tribute to his significant contributions to the growth of knowledge and education in Nigeria,” she said.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see that his legacy continues to motivate new generations of scholars and leaders.”

UNILAG Vice Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, appreciated the efforts of the state government towards the growth of the institution.

“The handshake between UNILAG and the Lagos State Government has always been strong, though we are a federal institution; we are of Lagos and for Lagos,” she said.

“UNILAG would have had things rough if the Lagos State Government was not working with us. We appreciate your magnanimity and we do not take it for granted.”

Ogunsola presented a visual showcase of the transformation journey of the aging auditorium, showing the installation of new floor tiles and carpets, over two thousand new set of chairs, new air conditioners, changing of air filters, vacuum cleaning, among several others.

As the remodeled auditorium was declared open, Sanwo-Olu urged the university community to “embrace a future filled with hope, where the voices and visions cultivated here will continue to inspire innovation, leadership, and transformation, not just for the University of Lagos, but for our entire nation.”
