Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has commissioned a newly constructed 248-bed students’ hostel at the Lagos State College of Nursing (LASCON), Igando, as part of efforts to improve nursing education and healthcare manpower development in the state.
The Lagos State Government disclosed this in a post on its official X account, saying the ultramodern facility would provide accommodation for more than 248 students and improve the welfare and learning environment of nursing students.
Speaking at the commissioning, Sanwo-Olu described the project as an investment in human capital development and the future of healthcare delivery in Lagos State.
The Governor emphasised the importance of nurses to the healthcare system, noting that their expertise, dedication and commitment remain essential to meeting the healthcare needs of the state’s growing population.
Sanwo-Olu also disclosed that his administration was pursuing approval for the establishment of a University of Medical Sciences in Lagos.
According to the governor, the proposed university would expand the state’s capacity to train doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals while helping to address the shortage of skilled personnel and reduce pressure on existing healthcare facilities.
The Governor charged LASCON management and students to take ownership of the newly commissioned hostel and ensure that the facility is properly maintained.
He said responsible use and maintenance of public infrastructure would encourage the government to provide additional facilities.
Sanwo-Olu also assured members of the nursing profession that the state government would continue to support initiatives aimed at improving their working and learning conditions.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, described the commissioning as another milestone in the state’s educational and healthcare development agenda under the Sanwo-Olu administration.
Sule said the facility reflected the Governor’s commitment to empowering young people, improving healthcare delivery and creating an environment that promotes “excellence, comfort and dignity” for future healthcare professionals.
The Commissioner also commended the management and faculty of LASCON, as well as the project execution team, for their efforts in delivering the hostel.
He added that the facility would contribute to shaping the character and professionalism of future generations of nurses.
