Giannis Antetokounmpo: Milwaukee player named GQ’s ‘Athlete of the year”

The ‘Greek Freak’ got GQ’s highest honor for an athlete in 2021

fter his incredible last season with the Milwaukee BucksGiannis Antetokounmpo received the highest distinction GQ Magazine has to offer. The publication does it for many categories that include best athlete of the natural years. In previous occassions, legends such as Steph Curry, Tom Brady or Lebron James received this honor. It’s time for Ginnis to get featured in one of the most important publications in the world. Known as ‘The Greek Freak’, Antetokounmpo comes from a large family of basketball players who mostly feature in the NBA. His brother Kostas won the NBA championship before him with the Lakers during the year of the pandemic with very little playing time. But Giannis and his brother Thanasis were key for the Bucks’ most recent ring.

When Giannis first arrived to the NBA from Greece, he was nowhere near the level he is today as hard work and dedication have given him the results he always wanted. There have already been several years before this one where Giannis dominated the NBA but he still was missing that championship. He didn’t only win the ring but he was also the finals’ MVP against the Phoenix Suns. “Six months before I came to the NBA, I was selling stuff in the street,” said Giannis on the latest GQ Magazine edition. “What I am today, nobody saw it. You know why nobody saw it? Because I didn’t see it. Ask my mom. No. ‘I thought you would be an NBA player and have a better life. Not what you are today’,” he added.

Giannis keeps mementos from the biggest NBA stars.

During his sit down with GQ, Giannis showed the many jerseys he has of the greatest basketball players out there. He confirmed there’s no beef with James Harden and showed some of his most valued possessions. “A lot of people think that I have beef with James Harden, which is not true,” Giannis said. “This right here is from Luka Doncic, the wonder boy. Anthony Davis. L.A., you know him. Joki. I love the game! Oh, this is mine from this year. This is from the MVP I won. The All-Star MVP. Bradley BealDamian LillardDerrick Rose. I love Derrick Rose. LeBron James, man. Look! Look what he wrote for me.”
