My journey from Lagos State University (LASU) to the United States is one I never imagined would happen. It’s a story of resilience, faith, and the boundless opportunities that relocation and international education can offer.
I began my academic journey at LASU’s School of Communication, where I studied Broadcast and Communication Technology. Those years were anything but easy. Lectures were intense, assignments piled up, and resources were scarce. Yet, amidst the chaos, I found my passion for communication and storytelling.
One of my proudest moments was serving as editor of Watzup Mag, the school’s magazine. Alongside a dedicated team of students, we produced articles on fashion, entertainment, and student life, often working late into the night. We had no funds, but somehow, support came from people who believed in our vision. Their encouragement kept us going, and it taught me the value of collaboration and perseverance.
I graduated in 2010 with a B.Sc. in Communication Technology, but my dreams of furthering my education had to wait. Life, responsibilities, and self-doubt delayed my plans for 12 years. Still, the desire to pursue a master’s degree never left me. It was my late father’s legacy and the encouragement of friends and mentors that finally gave me the courage to apply.
In 2022, I applied to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette for a Master’s in Strategic Communication. Relocating to the US was not an easy decision. I was stepping into the unknown—new culture, new systems, and immense academic demands. The application process itself was daunting, but I held on to my faith and the belief that this was my time.
Relocating to the US has been life-changing. The educational system here is unlike anything I experienced in Nigeria. The access to advanced facilities, research opportunities, and a global network of students and professionals has expanded my horizons in ways I never imagined. Beyond academics, I’ve gained exposure to diverse perspectives and innovative ways of thinking, which I know will shape my future.
Winning the Dr. Jung-Sook Lee Memorial Endowment Scholarship was a turning point for me. This award, recognising academic excellence and resilience, was more than just financial aid—it was a validation of the struggles, sacrifices, and determination that had brought me to this moment.
This journey has taught me that nothing is impossible when you believe in yourself and trust the process. I’ve come to realise that relocation is not just about changing your environment; it’s about transforming your mindset, broadening your perspective, and unlocking opportunities you never thought possible.
Come December 20th, I will be walking across the stage to receive my Master’s degree in Communication—a moment that feels both surreal and deeply fulfilling. This journey has been anything but easy, but every challenge, late night, and small victory along the way has led me to this milestone. Graduating is not just about the degree; it’s about proving to myself that perseverance pays off. As I look to the future, I am seriously considering pursuing a Ph.D., a step that excites and scares me in equal measure. For now, though, I am simply grateful for how far I have come and ready to see where this path leads next.
