Fed Govt Inaugurates First Digital Fabrication Laboratory

The Federal Government, through the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), at the weekend inaugurated the first digital Fabrication Laboratory (FABLAB 1.0) in Nigeria.

It said the equipment could be accessed free of charge by Nigerians who wanted to translate their ideas into innovation.

The government said the equipment would facilitate implementation of the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (NDEPS).

The FabLab is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment that include Printed Circuit Board (PCB) production equipment, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines, 3D printers, servers, GPUs, among others.

Inaugurating the FABLAB 1.0 at the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Puye, Abuja, the Director General, NITDA, Kashifu Abdullahi, said FABLAB was part of the agency’s effort to make Nigeria an innovation hub.

He added that the FABLAB would encourage digital innovators and makers to drive their ideas from inception to impact.

“The FABLAB maintains an open access policy to allow the FabLab to serve as a digital innovation accelerator for all innovators and makers.

“It allows open-production and public access to aid innovation and entrepreneurship activities,” Abdullah said.

He said the centre was open free of charge to all Nigerians who desired to innovate, create ideas beneficial to Nigeria’s digital economy.

Abdullahi added that the centre engaged in hands-on digital fabrication skills training and capacity building for in-house workers and external participants, in line with government policies.

He said to further boost digital innovation awareness among youths, visitation and tour of the laboratory facility by schools, universities and research centre was encouraged.
