Students of the Department of Mass Communication, Caleb University (CU), Imota, Lagos, have been advised to dream of being job creators rather than job seekers by embracing Entrepreneurship, at a time when thousands of Nigerian graduates are seeking white-collar jobs that are not existing.
This advice was given recently, by a Media Practitioner and Creative Director, Smart Brands Innovative Media Services, Mr. Yinka Padonu, during the institution’s 3rd Media Clinic which was held this November at the school’s Multipurpose Auditorium.
The Media Expert who spoke on the theme, “Steps to Media Entrepreneurship” told the students that the only way they can hedge against unemployment is to develop entrepreneurial skills around the course of their learning.
Padonu who also spoke at Covenant University last year, emphasized the need for all undergraduates to equip themselves with digital and entrepreneurial skills in today’s ever-evolving job market. He urge the students to think beyond traditional employment and consider starting their own ventures by taking the path of entrepreneurship.
He went further to share practical insights and real-life case studies of media entrepreneurs with success stories, highlighting the significance of innovation, adaptability, and staying current with industry trends.
He urged the Mass Communication students to leverage their academic knowledge and creativity to start unique media-related businesses that can thrive in the digital age.
He said: “Your mobile phone is a powerful device you can use to start a business. There are several simple applications in your phones for video, editing, graphics, writing, photography, social media etc with which you can use to generate income for yourselves as undergraduates. Your mindset must begin to change positively.” He added.
The media expert did not fail to share his success journey into founding a Media Agency. His inspirational words resonated with the aspiring media professionals, igniting a newfound passion for entrepreneurship. He added that he will be willing to share his knowledge of media entrepreneurship with students of other higher institutions if invited.
Concluding, he said, the Media Clinic initiated by the School’s Vice Chancellor Prof. Nosa, Owens-Ibie, in his 3rd edition has proven to be a platform for empowering the next generation of media professionals equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today’s dynamic media landscape.
