Elizade Varsity Founder Seeks FG Support For Private Universities

The founder of Elizade University in Ilara-Mokin, Ondo State, Chief Ade Ojo, has appealed to the Federal Government to extend financial support to private universities across Nigeria, citing funding challenges as a significant impediment to their development.

Ojo made the call during the university’s combined 8th and 9th convocation ceremony held on Wednesday at the campus.

He stressed that private university founders bear the full financial responsibility, which limits their growth efforts.

He said, “The major challenge facing private universities in Nigeria is funding. This significantly affects their growth. I appeal to the Federal Government, through the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission and the Honourable Minister of Education, to consider ways of supporting private universities, as their graduates contribute significantly to national development.”

Also speaking at the event, the Pro-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Olufemi Bamiro, commended the institution’s strides in governance and policy advancements.

He noted, “We have introduced a revised Student Handbook to guide students on their rights and responsibilities. Additionally, the council has approved a new gender policy, now in full effect, demonstrating our commitment to inclusivity and fairness.”

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Ijadunola, highlighted the institution’s progress in research and innovation, stating that Elizade University is “fast-growing, with an expanding research portfolio and a reputation that holds promise for global relevance.”

He outlined the university’s recent achievements in securing research grants and fellowships from notable organisations, including the International Foundation for Science, Global Environment Facility, and the Wellcome Trust, among others.

Ijadunola also disclosed that 484 students graduated across various departments in the 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 academic sessions.

He urged the graduates to uphold the institution’s values and be exemplary ambassadors in their future endeavours.
