Discovering Best Places For Your Thanksgiving Getaway

It’s the season of gratitude and thanksgiving and it would be all fun to embark on a memorable journey to celebrate in the heart of Nigeria. From vibrant cultural festivals to serene natural landscapes, Nigeria offers a diverse range of destinations to make your Thanksgiving and the yuletide season getaway truly special. Explore the rich and culturally diverse West African nation, Nigeria, for an unforgettable thanksgiving experience.

Calabar, Cross River State
Known as the ‘Cultural Capital of Nigeria’, Calabar is a captivating destination that comes alive during the Thanksgiving season. The city hosts the yearly Calabar Carnival, a month-long event featuring colourful parades, cultural and spectacular displays of creativity. Immerse yourself in the rich traditions of the Efik people while enjoying the warm hospitality of the locals. Don’t miss the opportunity to savour local delicacies and explore the beautiful landscapes surrounding the city.

Obudu Mountain Resort, Cross River State
For a Thanksgiving getaway that combines breathtaking scenery with adventure, head to the Obudu Mountain Resort. Nestled in the Obudu Plateau, this resort offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Take a cable car ride to the top, where you can indulge in outdoor activities such as hiking, horseback riding, and bird watching. The cool climate and lush greenery make it an ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Erin Ijesha Waterfall, Osun State:
Escape to nature and rejuvenate your spirit at the Erin Ijesha Waterfall in Osun State. Also known as Olumirin Waterfall, it is a natural wonder surrounded by lush vegetation. The cascading water and serene atmosphere create a perfect backdrop for reflection and gratitude. Climb the stairs to the top of the waterfall and enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. It’s an excellent spot to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty of the Nigerian countryside.

Okomu National Park, formerly the Okomu Wildlife Sanctuary, has been identified as one of the largest remaining natural rainforest ecosystem. Owing to the high biodiversity seen in the Okomu National Park, a Wildlife Sanctuary was first established there. The park holds a remnant of the Nigerian lowland forests that once formed a continuous 50–100 km (31–62 mi) wide belt from the Niger River west to the Dahomey Gap in Benin.

The park is accessible to tourists, and has well marked trails. There are two tree houses, one 140 feet high in a silk-cotton tree, from which visitors can view the park from above and observe bird life. Visitors can stay at chalets built on stilts, just outside the park entrance, surrounded by fig trees that are often occupied by Mona monkeys. Guides are available for forest walks, and will point out such things as termite nests and the many medicinal plants.

This Thanksgiving, consider exploring the diverse and enchanting destinations that Nigeria has to offer. Whether you prefer the vibrant cultural celebrations in Calabar, the serene mountain landscapes of Obudu, the natural rainforest of Okomu, or the natural beauty of Erin Ijesha Waterfall, Nigeria provides a range of options for a truly memorable getaway. Embrace the spirit of thanksgiving, create lasting memories, and immerse yourself in the warmth and hospitality of this beautiful West African nation.
