DELSU Boosts Food Security In Delta With 3000-Capacity Poultry

Following the inauguration of a 3000-capacity poultry at Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, the institution’s Director of Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies, CES, Professor Onoriode Emoyan, has said it will curb food insecurity in Delta State.

Emoyan, who said he was optimistic that the project would provide employment for many residents of the state, noted that quality protein would become cheaper.

The Director spoke at the inauguration ceremony in Abraka, Delta State, saying the 3000-bird capacity poultry was 100/50 feet.

According to him, the project, which was solar-panel fitted, has a brooding and store unit as well as automated drinkers.

“This project shall increase the internally generated revenue, IGR, of DELSU, serve as a resource verification outfit for affiliate programmes or departments, serve as  an accreditation resource centre for affiliate programmes or departments serve as  undergraduate, graduate, and advanced research  centre, and shall serve as a resource Centre for Industrial training, IT, for over 100 students,” he stated.

On the projects awaiting execution, Emoyan identified the activation of poultry and fish feed warehouses in site three, saying there was a need to expand and standardise the old fish pond and poultry house.

“We need to acquire a solar-powered electricity supply to reduce the cost of fuel and repair of electric generating sets, and activate the monogram machine for its optimum utilization (this will require the services of an expert, or we employ and train),” he said.

Meanwhile, DELSU Vice Chancellor, Professor Andy Egwunyenga, hailed the Director for the innovative enterprise, saying it was admirable.

Egwunyenga said Emoyan was exceptional in his passion and thinking capacity, noting that through his skills, many students had been trained.

His words: “I have just taken a tour of the 3,000 capacity poultry and you will agree that we are here in a transformed centre for entrepreneurship studies. Actually, transformation is a product of innovation. I will not be making an overstatement if I say that the current director of the centre is exceptional in his passion, thinking capacity and the way he has transformed and executed the vision of the Vice Chancellor with respect to this centre.

“This centre has become enviable because of what it has achieved. What it means is that if you are made a director, you are given the freedom to think and the Vice Chancellor is very receptive to ideas, constructive ideas. That has been the relationship between him and the Vice Chancellor.

“He has not stopped bringing new ideas to bear on the system. This is a centre that has not only helped to do the routine training of students in their courses but has also helped in contributing to the certification of 10,000. It is very remarkable. Students need to go through the centre because the training they undergo here is essential for their certification. It counts a lot. Through his skills, we have been able to train so many students. It is not just about the degree these students will have, but the certificate that they earned through the skill transfer that they have received here.”
