Oyo State College of Nursing and Midwifery has matriculated its maiden JAMB intake of 130 students into its Basic Nursing programme.
Oyo State Health Commissioner, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, receiving the students into the programme, said the change in mode of enrolling students into the college was to enhance the quality of nursing education in the state.
The Commissioner, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Oyo State Ministry of Health, Dr Kehinde Ayinde, declared that the state government had prioritised the advancement of nursing education by introducing the award of an academic certificate of national diploma in addition to the usual Registered Nurse and Midwife that is traditionally awarded by the Nursing Council.
According to her,” this significant achievement was made possible through a collaborative partnership between the Nursing Council and the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
“The programme’s inclusion under the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) indicates the administration’s commitment towards expanding access to quality nursing education and ensuring the development of nursing professionals in the state.”
The provost of the college, Dr Gbojubola Owolabi, reiterated that plans are in top gear to invite the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) for accreditation of the commencement of the Higher National Diploma, which would make graduates of the programme eligible to participate in the National Youth Service Scheme.
She urged the students to always remember the primary reason for coming to the college and refrain from wasting time on ventures that can distract their attention from attaining excellence, apply themselves to learning, and endeavour to relate well with other students in the college.
“Take time to read the student handbook and code of conduct given to you, because in this college, we have zero tolerance for unruly behaviour and disobedience to the rule of law. Always read official notices released by the college management on the notice boards. This will make you well informed about the college activities.”
