British Council, Africa Missions Partner On Teacher Training

Africa Missions Global, a non-governmental organisation, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the British Council to support teacher development across Nigeria.

According to a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of AMG, Mr Brown Oyitso, and the Country Director of the British Council in Nigeria, Ms Donna McGowan, the MoU was formalised at the Council’s office in Lagos.

The agreement allows AMG to deploy the British Council’s free online training resources in its teacher development programmes, while the Council will also provide offline training tailored to AMG’s needs.

Speaking at the event, Oyitso said the partnership underscored the Council’s and AMG’s shared commitment to improving education outcomes across Africa.

“The partnership aims to strengthen teacher training initiatives in Nigeria, with plans to extend the reach to other African countries. By building teacher skills and capacity, the collaboration seeks to improve classroom quality and student performance. By combining AMG’s community reach with the British Council’s expertise, we are better positioned to support teachers and enhance classroom learning,” he said.

On her part, McGowan reaffirmed the British Council’s commitment to equipping teachers with the tools needed to deliver high-quality learning outcomes.

“Our collaboration with Africa Missions Global is centred on sharing open-access training resources and expertise that can strengthen teacher capacity. We work with a wide range of partners globally, but our goal remains the same: to enhance education and create opportunities that are inclusive, sustainable, and impactful,” she said.

The MoU signing also heralded the launch of the AMG–British Council Digital Teacher Academy, which will offer a three-tier certification programme – foundational, intermediate, and advanced – covering modern pedagogy, assessment, and school leadership.
