Popular Nigerian Afrobeats singer Asake caused a stir at the Afro Nation music festival in Portugal on Saturday when he jumped into the crowd during his performance. The singer, who is known for his energetic live shows, leaped into the air with the intention of being caught by his fans. However, the crowd was not prepared for his sudden move and he ended up landing on the ground.
Asake was uninjured in the fall, but the incident sparked a debate on social media about the safety of crowd surfing. Some fans criticized Asake for putting himself at risk, while others defended him, saying that he was simply trying to connect with his audience.
The incident also drew attention to the issue of crowd safety at music festivals. In recent years, there have been several high-profile cases of fans being injured or killed in crowd crushes. In 2021, 10 people died at the Astroworld festival in Houston, Texas, after a crowd surge during a performance by Travis Scott.
In the wake of Asake’s fall, festival organizers have urged fans to be aware of their surroundings and to help each other stay safe. They have also reminded fans that crowd surfing is not allowed at all Afro Nation events.
Asake has not yet commented on the incident. However, he is expected to continue his tour as scheduled. He is due to perform in London on July 15th.
