The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has cautioned corps members participating as ad-hoc staff in the forthcoming Anambra State Governorship Election to maintain strict political neutrality, discipline, and professionalism throughout the electoral process.
The State Coordinator, Mrs. Pauline Ojisua, gave the warning during a sensitisation programme held for corps members in Awka on Tuesday, ahead of the November 8, 2025 governorship election.
The event, which took place at St. John of God Secondary School, Awka, brought together corps members from Awka South, Dunukofia, Njikoka, and Awka North Local Government Areas. Representatives of partner agencies including the FRSC, NSCDC, and DSS were also in attendance.
Addressing the corps members, Mrs. Ojisua reminded them that the NYSC-INEC partnership was built on trust and integrity, stressing that they must conduct themselves as impartial and patriotic ambassadors of the Scheme.
“You are apolitical and must not wear, display, or associate with any party symbol, slogan, or candidate. Avoid political discussions, inducements, or any action that could compromise your neutrality,” she cautioned.
She further advised the corps members to prioritise personal safety, avoid unnecessary movements, and report any security threat promptly to the appropriate authorities.
“Do not argue or resist in the face of violence; protect yourself first and contact security operatives or your supervisors immediately. Always move as a team and never handle election materials without proper escort,” she advised.
The coordinator also charged them to uphold good conduct, discipline, and professionalism during the exercise, reminding them that the credibility of the election depends largely on their attitude and conduct at polling units.
She emphasised that accepting gifts or gratification from politicians or their agents would amount to a betrayal of public trust, warning that any corps member caught in electoral malpractice would face severe sanctions from both INEC and NYSC.
“Your integrity is your greatest asset. Remember, the NYSC uniform does not confer immunity on you,” she added.
Mrs. Ojisua also briefed the corps members on the historical background of the NYSC-INEC collaboration, which formally began with a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2010.
She noted that the MoU provides for welfare, logistics, insurance cover, and other protective measures for corps members serving as ad-hoc electoral staff.
Reiterating the importance of communication, she urged corps members to maintain contact with their Local Government Inspectors and adhere strictly to official directives.
“Your safety comes first, your neutrality is sacred, and your integrity is non-negotiable,” she concluded.
The sensitisation exercise is part of NYSC’s statewide preparation for the November 8 Anambra governorship election, aimed at equipping corps members with the knowledge, discipline, and confidence required to perform their electoral duties effectively.
