Alleged Misconduct: NBA Probes UNICAL Lecturer, Adamawa REC, Abia Lawyer

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) yesterday announced the constitution of an ad hoc committee to investigate allegations of misconduct against some of its members.

Top on the list of those to be probed is the suspended Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, Professor Cyril Ndifon.

Also listed for investigation are the suspended Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Adamawa State, Hudu Yunusa-Ari and an Aba, Abia State based  lawyer, Ifunanya Excel Grant .

The NBA committee has the association’s 1st Vice President, Linda Rose Bala as chairperson with the  Assistant General Secretary, Daniel Kip, Chairperson of NBA Women’s Forum and the Chairman of the NBA Calabar Branch as members.

Ndifon was suspended by the UNICAL authorities  last week over allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by female students of the faculty while Yunusa-Ari is expected to respond to questions for  the  role he played in the alleged  illegal declaration of  the result of the supplementary 2023 governorship election in Adamawa State when  votes were still being counted.

Complaints against Miss Ifunanya are in respect of  “her social media notoriety of posting pictures and videos of herself unclad and smoking marijuana.”

She is called “the Baddest lawyer” on social media

National Publicity Secretary of NBA, Akorede Habeeb Lawal, said yesterday that the decision to set up the adhoc committee was taken  by the National Executive Committee of the body at its last  monthly meeting.

Besides, Lawal said the NBA had also formally requested Justice Flora Azinge of the National Assembly and Kano State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal to avail the association of further details over her recent allegation of an attempt to bribe her.

He said: “While it is important to underscore the fact that none of the lawyers petitioned or being investigated is deemed guilty of professional misconduct until the LPDC hands down its decisions after fair trial, the NBA President has emphasised the need for lawyers to continue to be of best conduct wherever they find themselves, and he reiterated that the present NBA leadership will not relent in ridding the profession of the very few bad eggs that may be found.”
